Maria Skłodowska (1867–1934) grew up in a Warsaw under Russian rule where universities were closed to women. She studied at an illegal night school, worked as a governess to pay her sister's tuition in Paris, and only then took her own turn — arriving with almost nothing and finishing first in her physics degree.
With Pierre Curie she processed tonnes of pitchblende in a leaking shed to isolate two new elements, polonium and radium, and coined the word radioactivity. She won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, then, widowed and publicly vilified over her private life, won it again in Chemistry in 1911 — the first person ever to win twice, and still the only person to win in two sciences.
